About Smokey's On The Gorge - Comfortable, Unique West Virginia Dining

PrintSmokey’s on The Gorge is our most famous and popular dining option—and with good reason! Smokey's is a showcase timber frame pavilion perched on the rim of the New River Gorge. The setting is unique, offering amazing full-service buffets, friendly service, and breathtaking views. Optional seating on our outdoor deck offers spectacular views of the New River Gorge and incredible Appalachian sunsets. Eating at Smokey’s is not an everyday dining experience.

Smokey's is usually open only for breakfast and dinner, so those looking for a great lunch should visit Chetty's Pub right next door to Smokey's and above the Canyon Rim Store. Another great option, especially for families with small children, is Buffler's BBQ located just across the road.

History

Smokey's Charcoal Grill was originally created in 1986. The restaurant the evolved into Smokey's On The Gorge was named in honor of Dana "Smokey" Morton, bus driver extraordinaire, who came to Class VI River Runners in 1979 when we purchased a 1954 GMC bus from the old Oak Hill City Lines. Smokey passed away in 1988, but his legend lives on. Some folks still remember Smokey and his long, handlebar mustache, warm smile, mischievous eyes and shaved head.
